Are the Olympics really about the “spirit of the games”, or are they just another political vehicle for the left?

Is it really about Unity, or Power
You always hear how the Olympic Games are about unity, and brotherhood. Competing to bring people together. Yet, you have to wonder if any of that is true. It seem obvious like all the “noble” worldwide organizations, the IOC is no different than the U.N. in it’s hypocrisy.
For instance: how can you say that you are not a fascist and then take the games to Nazi Germany? Or how can you say you don’t support Communism when you take the games to Russia; while the US and Russia — the USSR technically — are engaged in a battle of good and evil. The USSR being evil.
Why is that the IOC now sends the games to China?
The IOC of course is unrepentant.
“We feel, very strongly, it was the right decision.”
“We are just as proud of that decision today as when we made it.”
~~ IOC communications chief, Giselle Davies
Is it due to their stellar Human Rights record ?
A leading human rights activist, Hu Jia, was arrested last week (week of Feb 1 2008) prompting further calls for the IOC to speak out.
Is it due to their noble pursuit of freedom ?
“There’s no denying there has been a number of reports of late in the media of issues of concern. [the arrest of Hu Jia]
“But come August, there will be two weeks of competition when the whole world will be watching and up to 20,000 media on site.
“That will allow the world to take a look at Beijing and the wider Chinese society. We see that as positive - and think it will engender a stronger understanding.”
Is it due to the fact that the IOC despises all things American — or is it Western — and like liberals they want to stick their thumb in the eye of the US? Bingo.
“History will look back and say the Games were a key part in a rapid and fascinating evolution of a country which is front and centre of the global community.”
~~ IOC communications chief, Giselle Davies
The IOC, much like the Nobel committee seems more concerned with making political statements against the US, than for anything else. The UN, which is staffed by the same types of people as the IOC and Nobel Committee loathe the US. All three of these groups side with our enemies as a matter of course.

These people actually believe they are the reason that the world turns .
Over the course of the last seven years, there has been enormous change that has taken place in China - some of it thanks to the Olympics
~~ IOC chief Giselle Davies
Unreal, they actually believe they are the reason for anything happening.
“We believe the Games have been more positive than negative over the course of that time.”
Yea, no doubt Hitler was excited to see Jesse Owens run away with the Medal in the center of Nazi Germany. Surely that brought the war to a rapid conclusion. Yea, sure it did.

No Freedom for You
The UK Olympics Association went so far as to “gag’ it’s athletes. The UK seems to always be in sync with the IOC. Seems odd then that the IOC would be opposed to the “gag” of athletes. They are not, by they way. They are making the “we respect free speech” noise, whilst they “urge”nations to be “respectful”. In other words just shut up, we don’t want to point out to the hosts that they are evil. More so, we don’t want the populace of the world to realize we side with China, over America.
The UKOA has had to back down, after the public was alerted and made clear that it was unacceptable to “gag” their athletes. Good on ya, Brits. Now how about addressing Terrorism.
I wonder if they Brits will be upset if we complain in Londonstan (2012 Olympics) about their falling all over themselves to help terrorist kill our countrymen?
The IOC was warned before they awarded the Olympics to China what might happen.
The attitude of the media elite is clear: will the Olympic Athletes mouth off?
It doesn’t help when the athletes are as dense as Belgium’s Justin Henin: “Politics and sport must remain separate.” Tell that to the IOC, and China. Wake up people.
At least some get it. Germany to stick with Olympic Charter, no extra restrictions. Ok, mostly they get it. Swedes won’t gag athletes. In the US, USOC say no to gagging. New Zealand seems to be … well no one is sure: “Olympics Chiefs deny gagging NZ athletes.“
I should note that for all the “freedom” they have, it’s not ‘carte blanche’. There are some draconian restrictions in place for athletes .
Speak for those who can’t
I generally don’t like athletes making public displays about politics, as most are inane and lacking in any sophistication. However, I think someone needs to speak out on behalf of the Chinese. No one else is.
This makes the point nicely:
IF ANY of Australia’s 500 athletes at the Beijing Olympic Games have an opinion about China’s most controversial issues - human rights, the death penalty, pollution, Falun Gong, Tibet or Taiwan - they will have a freedom most Chinese lack. They will be able to voice their thoughts without fear of arrest, or censure from the Australian Olympic Committee.
Athletes will have a freedom that Chinese lack, speech.
“This affair is indicative of the lack of courage that characterizes some officials in the Olympic movement nowadays,” Paris-based Reporters Without Borders and the anti-censorship group Article 19, headquartered in London, said in a statement.
“Such behavior ends up making the Chinese authorities look like victims with whom one has to choose (one’s) words carefully. This is back to front. The victims are the thousands of political prisoners and the 100 or so journalists, Internet users and bloggers who are in prison solely for expressing their views peacefully,” the groups said.
I rarely agree with the “without borders crowd”, however they are right on this one. You would have to be an idiot to think the IOC is going to back down on sending the Olympics to China. The IOC is complicit with the Chinese government for these atrocities.

Is the Sky Brown?
Even more odd, is the IOC picking a place that is not even close to healthy for it’s athletes. China has a terrible smog problem to overcome. So bad, that they are going to force factories to close for the duration of the Olympic Games. I wonder if the IOC will reimburse all those people who lose a paycheck? Of course not.
When the 2008 Summer Olympics kick off this summer, China’s new economic might will be on display. But whether Beijing’s big coming-out party will be spoiled by the city’s notoriously foul air is still a question. For now, at least, some Olympic teams aren’t taking any chances and have decided to keep their athletes away from the city for as long as possible. Nearly two dozen countries are finalizing plans to fly their teams to Japan or Korea for several weeks of training before flying the athletes to China at the eleventh hour.
Nothing like thinking about people. If it’s about the games, then shouldn’t the venue be a place the athletes can actually compete in safely?
Is that food edible?
What about the food? The athletes are worried about the food in China, also.
The reason for the extra care is multifold: Fear of food-borne illnesses in China, a desire to ensure proper nutrition and the fact some athletes and teams are staying outside the athletes’ village.
There’s also the worry that tainted food could lead to a positive drug test. A caterer working for the USOC told the New York Times of finding a half chicken breast measuring 14 inches while shopping in a Chinese supermarket that could have fed a family of eight.
Fourteen Inches. You think they are using steroids?
“We had it tested and it was so full of steroids that we never could have given it to athletes,” Frank Puleo told the Times. “They all would have tested positive.”
Yep.
The Hypocrites Chime In
Director Steven Spielberg is ending his association with the Olympics. What’s the matter Steven, the kitchen getting too hot for you? Those Shekels costing you some of your “rep”?
At issue for both Farrow and Spielberg is China’s close relationship with Sudan, where thousands have been killed and millions displaced in the Darfur region.
If you are Black or invading America, Hollywood loves you. If you are White or Middle Eastern or Asian, they don’t give a flip about you. These same people think that Saddam Hussein should still be in power. These same people think that we should “talk” to China; it’s done so much good so far, hasn’t it? Yes, they have the Olympics. Nice job, talkers.
Spielberg had already sent a letter urging President Hu Jintao to use China’s influence during the Olympics to help the situation in Darfur.
These people actually think they are important.
Liars all
It’s simple. The people who are criticizing China do it half-heartedly. They love the Socialist system, just not when it’s not run the way the “elites” want it to be run.
Other outlets talking about this.
- Hold Fast says China still not promoting freedom
- Should Athletes speak up?
- Athletes gagged to protect Chinese Dictators
- Everyone is watching
- Britain not the only ones being gagged
- Reuters pimping the Olympics
- Prince Charles tells China he will not visit if invited — another hollow gesture. Hey bonnie Prince Chuck why not speak on the Christians being enslaved by the Atheists err Communist?
- Some athletes are upset about being pressured to speak out on China
