The Clemens Aftermath

The news of Roger Clemens and his accusers continues today. It’s clear that many people are not buying what ol’ Rog’ is selling. The House committee does believe Pettitte’s testimony, so much so they saw no reason to have him come before the committee. Some people are not so impressed by Mr. Pettitte .

The most important man that we heard from Wednesday on Capitol Hill, amid all the bluster, the embarrassing fawning over Roger Clemens and the multitude of mind-squishingly moronic questions, happened to be nowhere near Capitol Hill. Yet Andy Pettitte’s presence at baseball’s latest hearing before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform was unmistakable, his words unshakeable.

Roger Clemens came off as an know-nothing .

The Canadian Press says: Clemens doing the “misremembering”. They are pretty harsh on him.

Roger Clemens got at least one thing right on which there will be no misremembering: He is a trusting man.

Trusting enough to allow anyone with a needle and a good story to jab him wherever they want. Trusting enough to allow his wife to use human growth hormone even though he never touched the stuff.

So trusting in his abilities as a con man that he thought he could get away with his little scam before some politicians who know a thing or two about scams themselves.

“If I am guilty of anything it is of being too trusting of everyone, wanting to see the best in everyone, being too nice to everyone,” Clemens said.

Yes, he’s guilty. Guilty of being a saint.

The Congress did not get off either.

He told us so over and over again Wednesday on Capitol Hill, not that some of the politicians listening to his tale of good deeds needed that much convincing. One wanted to know what uniform he was going to wear to the Hall of Fame, while another wondered why a scumbag like Brian McNamee even deserved to be in the same room as him.

You half expected his sycophants to stand up and start saluting when Clemens got going on another one of his great contributions to mankind, which was coming out of retirement to put the USA uniform on to play for his country in the World Baseball Classic.

It was pretty disgusting. Clemens appeared to be shocked at some of the questions.

Clemens rolled the dice, figuring the force of his personality and his seven Cy Youngs would overcome any evidence that might be raised against him. You can hardly blame him because he’s spent the last 25 years being surrounded by people who do his bidding, and he’s come to expect that when he says something it must be the truth.

Unfortunately, investigators for the committee had been doing some digging in recent days and came up with some new evidence that turned this into something far more than just a he said/she said contest. Perhaps more unfortunately, the real Roger Clemens showed up, and even his lawyer jumping up and down and desperately whispering into his ear couldn’t save him from self destructing.

Clearly all the schmoozing was not working on everyone. He tossed in his agent, then a poor nanny — who we are NOT supposed to believe because he is better than her — and the Baseball Union in the lion’s den to be eaten so he could survive. The Boston Herald gives us a list of “speed bumps.”

1. People Roger threw under the bus:

* His wife - Roger turned her in not only for being an illegal drug user but also placed her in their master bedroom, alone with another man with her (I presume) derriere exposed.

* His mother - he claimed it was her idea for him to take B-12 injections

* President George Bush Sr. - Twice mentioned that a man that held the highest office called him - leading to the question did Sr intervene with the Republicans on the panel?

* His brother - he told the world that his brother was brought home from college because of drugs

* The Hendricks Brothers - Makes the completely un-believable claim that the Hendricks didn’t tell him that George Mitchell called (although Pettitte has stated that the Hendricks told him about Mitchell’s request)

* His Toronto Trainer who he blamed gave him a bad shot leading to an abscess

Such a great guy. Mercury News, says it best: Clemens trips over ego.

Clemens lost because he was less credible than the proven liar and because every other major figure in this episode, including Clemens’ good buddy Andy Pettitte, backed large portions of Macon’s account in previous testimony.

Clemens lost because his wife, Debbie, had to acknowledge (also in an affidavit) that she took high from McLean. Clemens said he had no idea at the time that she had taken high, a bewildering stance for him to take.

Clemens lost because his lawyers and his congressional cheerleaders made a great point about Macon’s credibility, yet on almost every instance raised, McLean seemed far more credible than Titan Roger.

It’s nice to see that I am not the only one who found his actions disgusting. The is even more disturbing, the belief that Bush would pardon Clemens. If he won’t pardon ‘Scooter’ Libby, why would he pardon a tainted baseball player? That makes no sense. The New York Daily News discusses it. Newsday says that the elder Bush supports Clemens. Well hell! everyone wants Clemens to be telling the Truth; that’s nothing. Problem is, he isn’t and it’s obvious. Bush is not going to throw Clemens a life line.

The funniest comment is the Roger Clemens has no clue what is going on in his life .

Poor Roger Clemens. As we learned in Wednesday’s Congressional hearing, that he has no idea what is going on in his life.

He didn’t know, for example, that his buddy, training pal, and teammate, Andy Pettitte was using Human Growth Hormone. Nor did he know that good old Andy had such lousy hearing. Pettitte told investigators, under oath, that Clemens told him almost ten years ago that he was using HGH. Clemens had no idea Andy thought that, he said.

Gosh, if only, Clemens had known

It gets better.

Just like his wife, Debbie. A great gal who just made a mistake. She admitted that McNamee was telling the truth when he said he injected her with HGH so she’d look better in a Sports Illustrated swimsuit photo shoot.

Roger had no idea, of course. He was out . . . somewhere when this sleazy drug dealer was injecting his wife. Evidently, they don’t have the kind of relationship that Pettitte and his wife have. Pettitte says he tells his wife everything, and she agreed, saying that her husband told her that Clemens said he was using HGH.

All told Roger Clemens looks like every other self-important self-obsessed desperate to keep his career going fool.
